Historical development

After work on the Leipzig – Hof railway line began in 1841 and the 28.73 km section Altenburg – Crimmitschau was inaugurated on March 15, 1844, Crimmitschau already had a simple train station. In 1851 the Leipzig – Hof line was completed. After the opening of the new train station in 1873, which is characterized by its representative architectural style, they were still used as apartments for railway employees; a restaurant is now in one of the buildings.

The first pedestrian tunnel, which is an underpass to the second track, was built in 1888. A 5.35 meter wide and 3.7 meter high new building on concrete girders was erected in 1979.

At the end of the 19th century it became increasingly apparent that the freight section of the station had reached its capacity limits. Since the location did not allow a third track, the consideration was given to building a new freight station in the Wahlen district, which was to be connected to the city station. The cost of the freight yard with a track length of 2.35 km was estimated at 750,000 marks . On April 4, 1898, this proposal was discussed in the Second Chamber of the Saxon State Parliament. It was approved. In September of the same year, construction work began on the new freight yard. However, the planned construction of the freight yard was downgraded to that of a loading point. Instead, the approximately four-kilometer stretch from Crimmitschau to Schweinsburg was built . The new industrial line was inaugurated on July 1, 1908.

As early as 1913, the reception hall was extended by a porch, giving it its current appearance. The interior of the building was redesigned twice, in 1927 and 1966/67. A few years earlier, in 1963, the Leipzig – Zwickau railway line was electrified. The entire railway system was rebuilt again from June 2002 to October 2003.

Great importance was attached to the station in the GDR . Sometimes up to 130 people were employed at or on the railway facilities in Crimmitschau. In addition to the city center, the station district was one of the liveliest places. At the end of 2001 the ticket office and thus the whole building were closed. It is now a listed building.

By 2011, two passenger elevators were installed.

With the opening of the City Tunnel in Leipzig in December 2013, the station was integrated into the new network of Central Germany's S-Bahn . It is served every two hours by the S5 line (Zwickau – Leipzig – Halle) and every hour by the S5X express line (Zwickau – Leipzig – Halle).

Re-use of the reception building

Since the closure there have been many ideas for reuse. For example, five students from the city's Julius-Motteler-Gymnasium wanted to set up a discotheque in the building in 2003. Advantages would have been a Caribbean bar and the occasional special train. Business premises and restaurants were also proposed. Only investors are missing, until today.
