The Leipzig-Engelsdorf station is the central marshalling yard in the Leipzig railway junction alongside the Leipzig-Wahren station, which was abandoned as a marshalling yard in 1994 . It is located on the Leipzig – Dresden , Engelsdorf – Connewitz and Wahren – Engelsdorf railway lines . For passenger traffic, the Leipzig Werkstättenstrasse (on the Leipzig – Geithain railway ) and Leipzig-Engelsdorf Hp (on the Leipzig – Dresden railway ) stops are located in the station area . Until December 2016 it was called Bahnhof Engelsdorf (b Leipzig) .

Marshalling yard

The freight yard, which opened on July 1, 1906, is a one-sided marshalling yard with 26, after the expansion of the subordinate group at interlocking D 31 directional tracks. The entry group at the western end of the marshalling yard is located on the Leipziger Güterring with double-track connections to the south and north. For trains arriving from Dresden that end at Ostberg , there is a siding to the approach group of the Westberg .

Approach group Westberg from the summit of the discharge mountain, left the signal box 2

For the operation of the freight station, 14 mechanical signal boxes, mostly of the Bruchsal G design , were built. In the course of time, the interlockings B and D were omitted without replacement due to the expansion of the switches and in 1974 the interlockings 5, 7, 8 (old), 10 and 11 due to the commissioning of the new central interlocking B8. During the Second World War , signal box 4 was destroyed in one of the air raids on Leipzig and in 1947 it was rebuilt in a different style with yellow clinker brickwork and a lever bench of the Jüdel design from old usable parts. In the 1960s, an electromechanical lever mechanism of the design 1907 was installed in the previously mechanical process control box A. In addition, the drainage hill received three bar track brakes as valley brakes. In 1971 the Westberg was converted to light signals. These are operated centrally by the dispatcher for Westberg, who was moved from signal box 2 to terminal box 1 at the same time. In the train of the new construction of the Engelsdorf intersection, which runs the Leipzig – Geithain railway line under the drainage hill, the drainage signal boxes A and 3 were rebuilt. Both received electromechanical levers of the 1912 design with lamp monitoring, the one for signal box A was moved from the old building on the intersection to the brake tower that had already been prepared for it . It was not until 1988 that the directional tracks were equipped with screw track brakes, and since then there are no longer any need for stumbling blocks .

A direct entry from the direction of Leipzig Hbf is no longer possible since the expansion of the route to Dresden. In the middle as well as at the eastern end of the marshalling yard, a transition to the line to Dresden is possible, and a third track leads directly from the freight yard parallel to Borsdorf. As a result of the expansion of the Leipzig – Dresden line, the continuous main tracks 1 and 2 and the third track to Borsdorf no longer belong to the control area of the central signal box 8, but to the ESTW Wurzen .

In 2003 the entry and exit connections in the direction of Geithain were discontinued after the freight traffic was discontinued. At the same time, the responsible signal box 4 was closed, the remaining points for the transition to single-track operation in the direction of Liebertwolkwitz was connected to the Leipzig East eStw. With the abandonment of connecting tracks 17 and 108, the signal box area of the former signal box 4 no longer belongs to Engelsdorf station. In 2012, the previously mechanical part of signal box 1 was converted to GS II DR track diagram technology with Siemens axle counters in preparation for the S-Bahn operation on the previous Engelsdorf – Stötteritz freight ring line (LESt / 6375) . Since then, track switching has been possible between Stötteritz and Engelsdorf and on station tracks 10 and 11 between West and Ostberg, which are equipped with a track block .

After the new construction of the Halle (Saale) freight yard , operations were discontinued in December 2018.

Passenger traffic stops in the station area

Leipzig-Engelsdorf Hp

Leipzig-Engelsdorf Hp (2015)

The Leipzig-Engelsdorf Hp passenger stop on the Leipzig – Dresden route has existed for tourist traffic since April 4, 2001 . It is located at the height of Hans-Weigel-Straße. The stop is served by the S3 line of the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland , the regional express trains Leipzig – Dresden and the regional trains in the direction of Grimma and Döbeln. Until December 2016 it was called Engelsdorf Hp .

Engelsdorf East

The stop Engelsdorf Ost was set up on November 1, 1877 as a stop at Sommerfeld. It was level with Engelsdorfer Strasse and was replaced on April 4, 2001 by the new Engelsdorf Hp site (now Leipzig-Engelsdorf Hp).

Leipzig industrial area east

The Leipzig-Industriegelände Ost stop at the level of Güterbahnhofstrasse existed on the Leipzig – Dresden route under the "bridge" over the freight station from May 26, 1974 to April 8, 2001. It was used in particular during the busy rush hour traffic of the Engelsdorf railway stations until the early 1990s . It was demolished without replacement; the pedestrian bridge that was renewed in the 1980s is still there.

Leipzig Werkstättenstrasse

The Leipzig Werkstättenstraße stop , located south of the marshalling yard on the Leipzig – Geithain railway line , is served by the regional trains of the RB 113 . Since the line was restarted in 2004 because of the short travel times, only a few trains stopped at the edge of the day at times. Since the rectification of travel times due to the turnaround of RE trains in Leipzig Hbf, there are demand stops all day . Until December 2016, the stop was called Engelsdorf Werkstätten .

Railway depot Leipzig-Engelsdorf

A railway depot has been located on the edge of the site for over 100 years . The last time it was a DB Cargo depot, it was closed on December 8, 2018.

A locomotive and wagon workshop was built in 1904 and 1905 and inaugurated on December 1, 1905. A Reichsbahn repair shop developed from this . Today the plant is part of Railmaint. In 2001 it was sold by DB and became the parent plant of the RSM Group around Hermann Weise. In 2010 it was sold to the Euro Maint company. In 2016 it was sold to the Railmaint Group. This carries out freight wagon maintenance here.
