List of serious accidents involving Swiss trains abroad

This article provides a chronological list of serious accidents of trains abroad resulting from the Switzerland wrong or Switzerland. These accidents resulted in loss of life or considerable damage. Most of these accidents involved locomotives from Swiss railways.

Müllheim ( Germany ) - the engine driver's alcohol consumptionGermanyGermany 
On July 17, 1911, the D-Zug 9 from Milan to Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof drove at extremely high speed to a construction site in the Müllheim (Baden) station and derailed. 14 dead and 32, some seriously injured, were the result. The engine driver fell asleep in front of the Müllheim train station due to his alcohol consumption and the train drove far too fast to the construction site at 107 km / h with a slow speed section with a maximum speed of 20 km / h.
Masera ( Italy ) - Brake failureItalyItaly 
On July 13, 1924 , a train with 85 passengers coming from Locarno derailed at the Società subalpina di imprese ferroviarie (SSIF) in Masera . The composition, consisting of a railcar and a passenger car , slipped on a 60 ‰ gradient due to incorrect adjustment of the brakes and fell into a swamp . The accident killed two people.

Domodossola ( Italy ) - Runaway trainItalyItaly 
On August 11, 1939, a freight train carrying passengers on the southern ramp of the Simplon line could only brake insufficiently. When entering Domodossola station , it crashed into parked cars at great speed and derailed, causing the SBB locomotive Ae 4/7 10973 to be badly damaged and most of the 55 cars being smashed. Six people died, one was seriously injured and eleven were slightly injured.

Montbard ( France ) - TEE covered freight wagonsFranceFrance 
On October 5, 1962, TEE Cisalpin, traveling to Paris , suffered a serious accident near the Montbard train station . The almost brand new RAe TEE II 1053 of the SBB drove at 140 km / h into a tank car that had crashed on the opposite track and protruded into the profile , derailed, overturned and then rammed a stone guard's house. The accident left ten dead and eleven injured. Control car 1, damaged in the accident, was broken off and replaced by a new vehicle.
Labergement-Sainte-Marie ( France ) - TEE crashed into truckFranceFrance 
On June 26, 1964, the RAe TEE II 1052 drove as TEE Cisalpin on a level crossing between Vaux-et-Chantegrue and Labergement-Sainte-Marie in a truck loaded with bitumen , with three fatalities and 20 injured.
Como ( Italy ) - Two freight trains collideItalyItaly 
On December 17, 1968, the collision of two freight trains on the section between Como and Chiasso operated by the Italian State Railways (FS) cost three lives. The accident was caused by a brake failure on the train coming from Milan . The rescue work was made difficult by the scattered load of a car transporter.
On February 9, 1971, a RAm TEE I diesel multiple unit of the SBB had a serious accident in Germany.
Aitrang ( Germany ) - derailment with subsequent rear-end collisionGermanyGermany 
On February 9, 1971, the TEE " Bavaria " derailed on the journey from Munich to Zurich . The diesel multiple unit RAm TEE I of the SBB drove through a curve behind the Aitrang station at excessive speed and derailed. The actual cause of the accident could never be clarified with certainty. A short time later, a rail bus drove to the accident site from the opposite direction . 28 people were killed and 42 injured. Among the dead was the actor and director Leonard Steckel .
Rheinweiler ( Germany ) - Switzerland Express derailed due to excessive speedGermanyGermany 
On July 21, 1971, the Switzerland Express derailed on the Rhine Valley Railway from Basel to Copenhagen before entering the Rheinweiler station . 25 people died, 121 were injured, some seriously. The probable cause was an incapacity of the locomotive driver, possibly a fit of weakness, at the time of the accident.
Bregenz ( Austria ) - "Bavaria" collides with the express trainAustriaAustria 
August 30, 1989 clashed on the Lindau-Bludenz railway south of Bregenz the Euro City "Bavaria" together and express "Montfort". One passenger was killed, 16 people were seriously injured and several others were slightly injured.
Preglia ( Italy ) - rear-end collision in the tunnelItalyItaly 
On July 31, 1993, the train 227 “Galilei” Paris - Florence, hauled by two SBB Re 4/4 IIs , drove in the Rio-Rido tunnel onto the Italia-Express Dortmund - Rome . The Italia-Express had come to a standstill due to a failure of the contact line voltage . There were one dead and around 60 injured. A dispatcher in Varzo wanted to let the Riviera-Express Dortmund- Ventimiglia pass on the wrong track without notifying the train crew and switched the safety system to single-lane operation. A block signal went on, whereupon train 227 rolled back and crashed into the still standing Italia-Express.
Lochau ( Austria ) - Eurocity runs over police officers and undertakersAustriaAustria 
On December 29, 2006, the SBB Re 421 of the Eurocity Munich - Zurich ran over two police officers and an undertaker and fatally injured them. The investigative team was busy investigating a rail suicide. Although the police notified the ÖBB control center in Innsbruck , the engine driver did not receive any reports about the people in the track area.
Müllheim ( Germany ) - Broken wheel axleGermanyGermany 
On May 20, 2011, during the railway accident in Müllheim, a broken wheel axle of a Swiss freight wagon led to the derailment of eight wagons, some of which were loaded with dangerous goods, at the Müllheim train station. Around 300 residents in the vicinity of the accident site were evacuated due to the risk of explosion.
Simplon Tunnel ( Italy ) - The rolling road was on fireItalyItaly 
On June 9, 2011, in the Italian part of the Simplon Tunnel, a freight train on the unaccompanied rolling road Novara - Rostock from BLS Cargo caught fire. There was great damage to property. 600 meters of track and 14 kilometers of cable had to be replaced. The driver of the two Re 4/4 locomotives was able to get to safety. The fire was triggered by the loose tarpaulin of a semi-trailer , which hit the catenary several times in the tunnel .

Hof ( Germany ) - Freight locomotive slashedGermanyGermany 
On the night of January 14, 2015, the Re 421 383 locomotive was slit open at the side by a reach stacker in the container terminal at Hof main train station . The arm of the parked reach stacker still protruded into the profile of the container train, which was pulled back from a track by a diesel locomotive . The Re 421 was rented to a German railway company by SBB-Cargo .
Dinslaken ( Germany ) - Freight train ran over ATMGermanyGermany 
On January 12, 2017 ran over Dinslaken one coming from the Netherlands freight train of SBB Cargo International one ATM , the thieves had placed on the tracks. The locomotive derailed due to the force of the impact. The perpetrators fled, the money was seized by the police.
Auggen ( Germany ) - RoLa crashes into concrete elementGermanyGermany 
On April 2, 2020 collided in Auggen on the Rheintalbahn one of the Re 485 004 of BLS Cargo transported train of the rolling road of RAlpin with a concrete element that had fallen onto the track during the demolition of an overpass. The locomotive driver was killed, one of the ten truck chauffeurs in the support car directly behind the locomotive was seriously injured and two were slightly injured.
