In the Braz railway accident on August 11, 1995, after a debris flow, an Intercity derailed on the Arlberg Railway near Innerbraz , killing four people.

Starting position

The IC 566 Niederösterreichische Musicians came from Wien Westbahnhof and was about 18:45 on the electrified Arlbergbahn down the valley towards Bludenz go. It was pulled by the ÖBB 1044 047 electric locomotive .

Shortly before, a very violent thunderstorm with persistent heavy rain had fallen in Vorarlberg's Klostertal .

the accident

The heavy rainfall triggered a mudflow in the area of the Masonbach , immediately east of the center of the municipality of Innerbraz . This caught the railway bridge over the Masonbach and tore it with it. As a result, the overhead line also tore , the railway line was immediately de-energized in the section in question and the locomotive automatically initiated an emergency stop . But that was no longer enough to bring the train to a stop before it reached the interruption in the route caused by the bridge collapse. The locomotive and three following passenger cars crashed into the bed of the Masonbach. The following passenger car, which had not fallen into the ravine, overturned on the track, the other four passenger cars of the train remained standing on the track.

consequences

The engine driver and three passengers died in the railway accident .

Several hundred firefighters, paramedics and emergency doctors as well as four rescue helicopters were involved in the subsequent rescue operation. The Austrian Armed Forces also took part in the search, rescue and clean-up work as part of an assistance mission with soldiers from the Bregenz pioneer and NBC defense platoon following a request from the Bludenz district captain . The railway line remained closed for more than three weeks after the accident because of the clean-up and repair work.

The accident locomotive was scrapped on site due to the serious damage to the frame and sheet metal structure after usable parts had been removed.
