The locomotive was a monthly magazine on topics of the railway industry.
The publication was published as a “trade journal for railway technicians” from 1904 by A. Berg's publishing house in Vienna . This publishing house was taken over by Oskar Fischer in the 1920s, who remained the magazine's publisher until 1938. Then the editorial material had to be transferred to Berlin and the magazine appeared in Berlin, the material was later lost. The magazine was published by the printing and publishing company E. Gundlach Aktiengesellschaft, Bielefeld, until it was discontinued due to the war in 1944 (last issue August 1944) .
The first editors of the magazine were Hans Steffan and Ernst Prossy . Many well-known locomotive designers and specialists in German-speaking countries wrote in the magazine, u. a. Johann Rihosek , Georg Lotter or Rudolf Sanzin . But Steffan and Prossy were also active as locomotive designers and are considered to be the creators of the elegant Südbahn express train series 109 .
When analyzing the magazine, it is striking that the authors largely stayed away from political currents in the period of publication up to 1939, be it in the Danube Monarchy , in the First Republic , or in Austrofascism . In the Third Reich there were more political statements. Even in this latter epoch, however, there are only a few contributions that deal directly with National Socialism and its relation to the railway system. Where this takes place, it is almost compulsory. It is noteworthy that even in the last issues in 1944, historical articles on old Austrian locomotives that were already scrapped were printed, although the editorial line had been trend-setting since 1904 with a strong focus on German and international railways.
In addition to the subtitle, the magazine also dealt with numerous other aspects of the railway system, including historical topics and questions in the museum context. The locomotive can be seen as the predecessor of the Eisenbahn magazine, which has been published in Vienna since 1948 , although there was only a rudimentary continuity in terms of content, but neither in terms of publishing nor direct personnel.
German-speaking locomotive historians consider the magazine an important support for further research.

The Locomotive History Working Group of the Railway History Research Association worked with the Austrian National Library to completely digitize all editions up to 1939. A DVD edition from the years 1904 to 1938 is sold at bahnmedien.at . The years from 1904 to 1944 are made available in the ANNO system of the Austrian National Library. The DVD edition offers a database search (tables of contents, full text), the online edition does not.
