The Trzciana railway accident on January 14, 1918 was the head-on collision of two express trains in Trzciana station . 16 people died.

Starting position

The two express trains No. 9 and 10 ran in the opposite direction on the Krakow - Rzeszów - Lemberg (today: Lviv / Lwow) railway . Both trains were delayed.

There were four tracks available in Trzciana station , two of which were occupied by freight trains , including one of the through tracks .

the accident

The dispatcher , decided after he was the train number reported. 10 to have already granted entry permit into the station for the train no. 9 retake and only enter the train no. 10. The withdrawal of the entry permit happened very late. Train no. 9 was already in front of the entry signal showing "Drive free" when it hit "Stop". The engine driver braked immediately, crossed the signal by almost 400 meters, but came to a stop about 140 meters in front of the station building . The engine driver and stoker went to the dispatcher on foot to investigate the situation. From the other direction, train no. 10 drove to the same track at almost 60 km / h. When the engine driver saw the headlights of the locomotive of train no. 9 in front of him, he braked immediately. However, the braking distance was no longer long enough to prevent the collision . Both locomotives and the first wagons of both trains derailed.

consequences

16 people died, 88 were also injured.
