The CJ Ge 2/2 4–5 are two-axle electric locomotives of the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) and their predecessor railways. The remaining vehicle has been known as the Te 2/2 4 tractor since 1966, and later it was given the road number 504.

With regard to the opening of the right from the beginning electrically operated Tramelan-Les Breuleux-Manderscheid train (TBN) in 1913, as well as the simultaneous electrification of the in Tavannes subsequent Tramelan-Tavannes train (TT) ordered the two railway companies jointly electric power units. In contrast to the railcars, the mechanical part of which came from the Schweizerische Wagons- und Aufzügefabrik Schlieren (SWS), the locomotives were entirely made by Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) built.

The four electric railcars BCe 2/4 60 and 61 as well as 70 and 71 for passenger traffic and the two electric locomotives Ge 2/2 4 and 5 for freight traffic and the pre-tensioning service of the railway line, which rises up to 50 per thousand, were procured. The vehicles no. 60, 61 and 4 came to the TT, no. 70, 71 and 5 to the TBN. Both types of vehicle have the same BBC electrical equipment. It only differs in that the locomotives have one controller in the middle of the car body and the railcars have two controllers at each end of the car body .

technical description

The current passed from the pantograph with a cable pull to a roof-mounted machine, which was automatically triggered in the event of an overcurrent. The starting and braking resistors are located in the stem on the Le Noirmont side . The two traction motors with a pawl bearing drive are connected either in series or in parallel . In order to achieve the service weight, ten centimeter thick ballast plates are built into the two stems, on which the devices stand.

The locomotives originally had a vacuum brake , which was replaced by an air brake in 1957 . The associated pump is located in the front of the Tavannes side. In 1957 a new main switch , a safety control and a speedometer were installed. In 1966, the central buffer couplings were replaced by semi-automatic + GF + couplings . At the same time, the ventilation of the starting and braking resistor was improved, which was necessary when the contact wire voltage was increased from 1200 volts to 1500 volts in 1953.

The vehicles were painted green on delivery. In 1951 the Ge 2/2 No. 4 was painted red.

Operational use

With the new procurement of rolling stock (railcar on the right in the picture) in 1952/53 by the CJ, the Ge 2/2 (left) was used for service trains.

With these small locomotives with a service weight of originally 16 tons, no heavy freight trains could be carried on a gradient of 50 per thousand. Often the Ge 2/2 were harnessed to a railcar in order to pull stooled standard gauge cars . The two locomotives remained essentially unchanged during their service life.

Through the merger of TT and TBN in 1927, the locomotives came to Chemin de fer Tavannes – Noirmont (CTN). Even in 1944, when the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) merged, the vehicles kept their company numbers. While the Ge 2/2 5 had an accident in a frontal collision in Orange on October 27, 1953 and was broken off in 1954, the Ge 2/2 4 has been preserved and was used by the CJ for service trains .

In October 1979 there was a control fire. The vehicle was in the workshop for almost two years and was renamed Te 2/2 504 during this repair.

After the machine had been defective for several years in Tavannes, it was repaired by the CJ in connection with the anniversary celebrations for the centenary of electrical operation on the Tavannes – Tramelan – Le Noirmont railway line. It was painted green and given the original name.
