The Chemins de fer du Jura , abbreviated CJ, German Jura railways , are a railway company in the Jura in Switzerland . They operate a meter-gauge rail network of 74.3 km in length, a standard-gauge route of 10.9 km and several bus routes . The CJ was created in 1944 from the merger of CTN, RPB, RSG and SC.

history

Predecessor railways

The oldest stretch of the Chemins de fer du Jura was opened in 1884 by the meter-gauge Tavannes – Tramelan Railway (TT) and leads from Tavannes to Tramelan . The line was electrified in 1913.

Since 1892, the meter gauge combines Saignelégier-La Chaux-de-Fonds-Bahn (SC) Saignelégier about Manderscheid with La Chaux-de-Fonds , the track ended initially on the outskirts of La Chaux-de-Fonds and only since 1893 until current train station in the city.

The Régional Porrentruy – Bonfol (RPB) opened its standard gauge line from Porrentruy to Bonfol in 1901 . To this day, this stretch is isolated from the other stretches of the Jura Railway. In 1906, Switzerland and the German Empire decided to build a rail link from Bonfol via Pfetterhausen to Dammerkirch in Alsace . The RPB built the short section to the border and put it into operation on November 1, 1910.

In 1904 the standard gauge Régional Saignelégier – Glovelier (RSG) was opened between Saignelégier and Glovelier . In 1906 the RSG entered into a joint venture with the RPB.

The meter-gauge Tramelan-Breuleux-Noirmont Railway (TBN) from Tramelan via Les Breuleux to Le Noirmont was opened as the last railway line in 1913 . In Tramelan this has a connection to the TT to Tavannes, and in Le Noirmont to the SC to La Chaux-de-Fonds and Saignelégier. The TT line has also been electrified since 1913, and a joint operating group made it possible to carry out comprehensive rail traffic. 1927 fused the TT and finally to the TBN Chemin de fer Tavannes-Noirmont (CTN).

In order to modernize the outdated railway systems, all four railways located in what was then the Bernese Jura merge on January 1, 1944 to form the Chemins du fer du Jura (CJ).

The poor condition of the tracks of the standard gauge line of the former RSG led to the temporary suspension of passenger traffic in 1948. The CJ's car operation came about through replacement traffic. As a result, the tracks were not simply renewed, but the entire route was re-gauged to the meter gauge, so that since 1953 a large coherent meter-gauge rail network has formed with the routes of the former SC and CTN. The meter gauge network has been operated with 1500 V direct current and new rolling stock since October 4, 1953 .

On May 17, 1952, electrical operation with 15 kV 16 ⅔ Hz alternating current was started on the Porrentruy – Bonfol standard-gauge line. The vehicle fleet consisted of small Ce 2/2 locomotives and three used passenger cars that were taken over by the SBB . Freight traffic from Bonfol to Pfetterhouse was now handled with a diesel tractor instead of steam locomotives, and passenger traffic ceased on December 31, 1946. On January 4, 1970, the end of cross-border freight traffic followed.

The CJ continued the modernization. In 1968, a BDe 4/4 101 railcar and a Bt 121 control car were procured for the Porrentruy – Bonfol route . Since 1986, shuttle trains with type BDe 4/4 II railcars have been used on the narrow-gauge network , which allow a speed of 90 km / h. In 2001 Stadler Rail delivered four low-floor articulated multiple units ABe 2/6 and in 2016 five low -floor multiple units Be 4/4 were expected.

The CJ are still active in freight transport. Standard- gauge wagons are transported on roller stools on the narrow-gauge network . Rubbish has been transported to the La Chaux-de-Fonds incinerator since 2000 . These transports from Tavannes and Glovelier to La Chaux-de-Fonds make up a large part of freight transport. The renovation of the Bonfol chemical waste dump resulted in increased freight traffic on the standard-gauge line.

Steam trains have been running again on the CJ's narrow-gauge network since 1993. La Traction , in partnership with the CJ, offers public steam rides from May to September.

Railway lines

The current rail network consists of the main Glovelier – La Chaux-de-Fonds line , from which the Le Noirmont – Tavannes line branches off in Le Noirmont , and the independent standard-gauge Porrentruy – Bonfol line . At the bus stop Combe-Tabeillon , shortly after Glovelier, overcoming the 500 meters altitude difference starts on the Jura -Plateau with a hairpin which requires the engine driver setting a course by hand and the change of the cab.

For the numerous refuse transport trains, the CJ rely heavily on former passenger railcars, which are actually used like luggage railcars, but without changing the designation. When the 403 baggage rail car was converted into the 411 baggage rail car, innumerable replaced components were left in 1986, including the bogies and the entire electrical system. Basically only the missing car body stood in the way of further use; this was found in the form of the BDe 4/4 from 1947, built in two copies for the Biel-Täuffelen-Ins-Bahn (BTI). The BTI had sold railcar 5 to the Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn (FW) in 1977 , where it was used as railcar 7 (later 207). After the FW no longer needed the vehicle, the BTI took it back as a spare parts donor, but had no use for the car body itself and left it to the CJ. In 1991 they assembled "their" railcar 621 from the existing parts in their own workshop.

After the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) had no use for the previous direct current railcars after the voltage change of the former Chur-Arosa-Bahn (ChA) in 1997, the CJ were able to acquire two ABe 4/4 in 1999 , and after various adjustments and minor modifications in 2000 railcar 641, and in 2001 railcar 642 put into operation.

After the Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn, now abbreviated as FWB, modernized the rolling stock park with five new railcars in 2013, the five Be 4 / 4s were parked and sold in the same year . The CJ secured the three railcars 11 to 13, which arrived at the CJ workshop by the end of 2013, and were prepared as railcars 615 to 617 for CJ operations. In the first quarter of 2014, railcar 15 was taken over, but it was never used and was scrapped in the first half of 2015.
