The royal lily ( Lilium regale , syn .: Lilium myriophyllum ; Chinese  岷江 百合 , Pinyin Mínjiāng bǎihé ) is a plant species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the trumpet lily section . The king lily is popular in gardens and is an excellent cut flower because of its long shelf life .

description

Flower details

The royal lily reaches a height of 50 cm to 180 cm. The onions are round and up to 10 cm in size, they are covered with lanceolate white scales that turn purple in the air. The stem is papilose and has roots at the base , the leaves narrow and linear , up to 7 cm long and about 3 mm wide. They are papillous on the underside on the median nerve and on the edges and mono-nerved on the edge.

The plant blooms from June to July with 1–8 in an umbel horizontally protruding, funnel-shaped, strongly fragrant flowers. The flowers consist of six 9–11 cm long and 1.5–2.0 cm wide petals. There are three crown- and three sepals , but look very similar. The basic color of the flowers is white, towards the base it is yellowish. The tepals are overflown purple on the outside along the median nerve. The anthers are elliptical, the pollen yellow and the nectaries smooth.

The seed germinates epigeously .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

distribution

The king lily is found on stony embankments and often on sandbanks, at altitudes between 800 and 2500 m above sea level. It was originally endemic to Sichuan in the west of the People's Republic of China and was introduced into Europe in 1910 by Ernest Henry Wilson , who devastated a remote valley in the province during an expedition and brought over 6000 onions to Europe. He fell from a rock, which shattered his leg and almost cost his life - that's why he later spoke of his "lily limp".

Like all species of lily, it prefers well-drained soil, but it is more tolerant of the pH value than other species as long as it is rich in nutrients. It prefers partially shaded to full sun locations where it is hardy.
