The CJ BCe 2/4 are four-axle electric railcars from the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) and their predecessor railways.

procurement

The Tramelan-Les Breuleux-Le Noirmont railway (TBN), which was electrically operated from the start , opened in 1913. At the same time, the Tramelan-Tavannes-Bahn (TT) electrified their connecting railway line to Tramelan in Tavannes . For this purpose, the two railway companies jointly procured two electric railcars BCe 2/4 60 and 61 as well as 70 and 71 for passenger traffic and one electric locomotive Ge 2/2 4 and 5 each for freight traffic and pre-tensioning service. The railcars no. 60 and 61 came to the TT, no. 70 and 71 to the TBN.

Technical description and changes

BCe 2/4 No. 70 on delivery

Railcars and Ge 2/2 locomotives have the same electrical equipment from Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC). This only differs in that the BCe 2/4 have two controllers at each end of the car body and the two locomotives have one controller in the middle of the car body. The mechanical part of the railcars came from the Schweizerische Wagons- und Aufzügefabrik Schlieren (SWS).

The vehicles had 8 second class seats and 32 third class seats. The two bogies of the "Maximum Truck" type, each with one drive and one running axle, are striking . The railcars with wooden boxes were painted light / dark green on delivery.

Through the merger of TT and TBN, the vehicles came to Chemin de fer Tavannes – Noirmont (CTN) in 1927 , although they kept their company numbers. During the merger in 1944 to form the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ), the vehicles were given the numbers 501–504.

The four railcars remained essentially unchanged in the course of their operational use. The vacuum brake was retained, although the rest of the rolling stock was equipped with an air brake. The railcars were partially converted for use as service railcars.

Railcars No. 501 and 503 were painted light green from 1950, No. 504 from 1949.

Operational use

Restored railcar BCe 2/4 number 70.

The railcars handled all passenger traffic on the Tavannes – Le Noirmont route until 1953. With the acquisition of new passenger railcars by the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ), the vehicles were used for secondary tasks or were scrapped:

BCe 2/4 501:   from 1953 as Xe 2/4 901 from the train service used
1955 discarded
1956 canceled
BCe 2/4 502: 1953 discarded and canceled
BCe 2/4 503: from 1953  initially used as Xe 2/4 903 by the railway service
1966 Renamed to Xe 2/4 503
1971 put out of operation
BCe 2/4 504: from 1954 initially used as Xe 2/4 904 by the railway service
1959 Renamed to Xe 2/4 801
1967 canceled

The Xe 2/4 503, which was parked because of poor insulation, was restored for the centenary in 1984 and largely returned to its original condition as the BCe 2/4 70. The historic vehicle with the original paintwork and the eye-catching lettering Tramelan – Breuleux – Noirmont is stationed in Saignelégier and has been running on nostalgic trains for years, mostly together with the original two-axle C2 7 car.
