The station Maienfeld in the town of Maienfeld is the only station in the Swiss canton of Grisons , which only standard gauge trains of the Swiss Federal Railways is operated.

history

Like Landquart station , it was put into operation on July 1, 1858, when the Chur – Rheineck railway line opened . On July 18, 1858, two locomotives collided at the crossing station. Since the opening of the railway line from Sargans to Zurich, the station has also been connected to this line.

Until the line from Landquart to Bad Ragaz was upgraded to double lanes in the 1990s, Maienfeld was an important crossing point. Because the railway systems were operated with an on-site signal box up to this point in time, the station was open and staffed from the first to the last train, despite its otherwise minor importance.

In the 1990s, the SBB stopped checking in luggage at the train station. After the expansion of the railway line and the relocation of the signal box, they only wanted to continue operating the station as an unattended station. The listed wooden station building has been renovated. Since then, the station has been operated by an employee of the Swiss Railway and Transport Personnel Association (SEV) on commission. With his retirement in summer 2009, the station counter was definitely closed.

Maienfeld station was manufactured and sold by Kibri as a kit 9496 for model railways H0 gauge (1:87 scale).

Transport links

The station is served by the regional trains on the route from Chur to Ziegelbrücke . In fringe hours, when the regional trains are not running, however, express trains on the route from Chur to Zurich also stop.

Station in the film

The station can be seen as the original arrival station corresponding to the book in the first German-language film adaptations of the Heidi novels by Johanna Spyri . The film Heidi ended in 1952, its sequel to Heidi and Peter in 1955. In Johanna Spyri's book in Chapter XIII it can be read in the original orthography: Then all of a sudden, when Heidi didn't even think about it, the [204] call rang out: "Mayenfeld!" It jumped up from its seat, and so did Sebastian, who had also been surprised. Now they were standing outside, the suitcase with them, and the train whistled further into the valley.
