Shenhai Jing

Shenhai Jing ( Chinese  燊 海 井 , Pinyin Shēnhǎi Jǐng ) is a salt well in the southern Sichuan Basin in the Da'an district of Zigong in the Chinese province of Sichuan . Natural gas is also produced .

It was drilled between 1823 and 1835 during the Qing Dynasty and was the first well in the world to be over 1,000 meters deep.

In the Ming Dynasty, Zigong began using natural gas to boil down the brine.

Salt production in Zigong looks back on a history of over 2,000 years. There is also a salt museum there. Already in the 3rd century there were reports about the natural gas in Sichuan for boiling the brine .

The Shenhai Jing salt works has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (3-57) since 1988 .
