Wagon master (railway)
A wagon master is an employee employed by a railway company . Before each train journey, the wagon master determines the operational safety and roadworthiness of block trains , groups of wagons or individual wagons and their loads. He carries out technical tests on both freight and passenger coaches. He checks these for damage and defects and has to decide independently whether the respective wagon has to be removed from the train for the repair or whether it may continue to run to its destination with restrictions and thus only be repaired at a later point in time. He can also carry out the brake test. In contrast to the less qualified wagon inspector , the wagon master can also carry out examinations that go beyond a purely visual inspection. In the German set of rules , these are wagon inspections , special wagon inspections and fitness tests . For this purpose, available to the auto mechanic tools such as calipers , Radsatzlehre, center distance and Wagenmeister sound hammer available. The wagon master's hammer is used exclusively as a sound hammer to carry out the sound test on tires with tires . Smaller repairs, such as replacing worn brake blocks (rather seldom in passenger traffic these days), missing a screw, replacing defective lamps, can be carried out by the wagon master himself.
Wagon masters who work in passenger train traffic are referred to as wagon masters P, with additional training as train technicians. Wagon masters who work in a container station may have to check the correct loading of the swap bodies or containers as part of the technical handling of the wagon. Such wagon masters are wagon masters G / KV with additional qualification Z7.
In Switzerland, the job title is "Wagenvisiteur" or "Visiteur".
