Sürmene ( Ottoman ﺳﻮرﻣﻨﻪ Sürmena , from Greek Σούρμενα Sourmena ) is a small town in the Turkish province of Trabzon .

It is located in northeastern Turkey on the shores of the Black Sea between the provincial capitals Trabzon and Rize , 35 kilometers east of Trabzon and 14 kilometers west of the small town Of .

history

Sürmene was originally eight kilometers to the west at the location of today's small town Araklı at the mouth of the Karadere and was rebuilt at its current location at the mouth of the Manahoz Deresi at the beginning of the 20th century . Presumably from the Roman period to the middle of the 7th century there was a settlement near a large fortified military camp south of the present-day village of Canayer. In the Middle Ages, a little west of Araklı was a settlement protected by a fortress.

economy

80% of the population earn their living in agriculture. The cultivation of tea and hazelnuts in particular contributes to the income of the residents in Sürmene. In Sürmene there is a state tea factory (Caykur) and nine private tea factories with a total of around 600 employees. Fishing is also a livelihood for many people.

In addition, eight shipbuilding companies have settled in Sürmene, which together employ around 180 people.

Sürmene has made a name for itself nationally and internationally in the manufacture of knives. The Sürbisa company produces knives for the household sector under the name “Sürmene”. Many smaller manufacturers handcraft knives that are used in the hunt, in the household or sold as jewelry. The knife also plays the main role in a folk dance typical of Sürmene (Bicak Horonu).

The most famous culinary specialty is a dough dish prepared with cheese or minced meat (sürmene pidesi).

Sürmene is home to the football club Sürmenespor, which was founded in 1967 and currently (2014/15 season) plays in the Trabzon amateur league. The greatest success of the Sürmenespor club was playing in the TFF 3rd division in the football seasons between 2007/08 and 2009/2010.
