Vakfıkebir (formerly Büyükliman , Pholí ) is a Turkish coastal city on the Black Sea and a district in the Trabzon Province .
history
Vakfıkebir's exact founding date is not known, but centuries ago it was part of the Empire of the Hittites , the Romans, the Byzantine Empire and Trebizond. In 1461 it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire.
The city received its current name from Gülbahar Hatun, the mother of Selim I , then Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Her Hatuniye Foundation, which was founded in Trabzon and which also received Vakfıkebir's sales, ensured that the city, then still known as Büyükliman, was given its current name, which translates as "Great Foundation".
During the First World War, the city was occupied by the Russian Empire on July 20, 1916, and this occupation ended on February 14, 1918.
In 1914, Tonya, located in the south of Vakfıkebir, split off and became its own town. Between 1980 and 1990, Beşikdüzü and Şalpazarı in the west and Çarşıbaşı in the east followed.
