history

The ancient place Allante is located near the modern small town. The toponym Atalantin ( Greek  Ἀταλάντην ) is mentioned by Thucydides . Later Stephanos of Byzantium performed the city of Allante .

A cemetery has been preserved from the Byzantine period and it is said that Bogomils were also buried there. The church Apostolon Petros and Paulos (Ιερός Ναός των Αποστόλων Πέτρου και Παύλου) also dates from this period . The church is registered as an archaeological monument (Φ.Ε.Κ. / 665/1988). Under Ottoman rule the place was called Gialetzik (Γιάλετζικ). The Turks had conquered the area around 1430.

In modern times, many refugees from the Turkish areas were settled and the place was then renamed Chalkidon (Χαλκηδών). Some of the refugee families came from Chalcedon ( Kadıköy Χαλκηδόνα; Κατίκιον). The proportions of the population were:

  • 150 families from Chalcedon
  • 40 families from Pyrgos (Πύργο της Ανατολικής Θράκης), Eastern Thrace
  • 30 families from Genikii and Neochori (Γενίκιοϊ και Νεοχώρι της Χηλής Μ. Ασίας), chillies , Asia Minor
  • 20 families from the area of Tsolos (Τσολού της Μ. Ασίας), Asia Minor
  • 7 families from Prousa (Προύσα της Μ. Ασίας), Asia Minor

Later came Sarakatsanen from Eastern Macedonia added.
