Columbina is a genus of pigeon birds that belongs to the subfamily of American pigeons . As a rule, seven species are assigned to the genus, which are native to North, Central and South America. It is not yet certain whether the two species of the genus Scardafella are not also includedin the Columbina.
Appearance
Columbina are small pigeon birds. The dwarf dove only reaches a body length of 15 centimeters. The sparrow dust is only slightly larger at 16.5 centimeters. This is roughly the size of a sparrow. Most of the remaining species are slightly larger and reach the size of a star .
As is characteristic of American pigeons, their shape is compact. The plumage lacks striking colors. Gray and brown tones with black spots and feather edges predominate.
distribution and habitat
The distribution area of Columbina extends from the south of North America over Central America and islands of the Caribbean to Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. The northernmost distribution area has the sparrow dust , which in the United States colonizes the Atlantic and Gulf coast from southern South Carolina to the southeast of Texas . On the west coast, the species is also found in California . Inland, southern Arizona is also populated.
The individual species colonize open terrain with trees and bushes, savannas, wasteland, secondary forest and cultivated land. Some species have also opened up to human settlement and are found in gardens and parks.
behavior
Columbina species spend most of their time looking for food and sunbathing on the ground. However, they boom to rest and sleep. Their nest is also in trees and bushes. The clutch comprises two eggs. The reproductive habits in the wild have not been examined in more detail for all species. The breeding period for the species examined in more detail is between 11 and 14 days. The nestling period is between ten and 18 days. The South American picue pigeon belongs to the species with a very short nestling time . In contrast, the nestling period for dwarf pigeons lasts 18 days .
