Pigeons

Scardafella is a genus of pigeon birds that belongs to the subfamily of American small pigeons . The genus includes only two species that are native to North, Central and South America. It is not yet certain whether the classification of the two species in a separate genus is justified. Some authors assign them to the Columbina , another genus of the American small pigeons.

Appearance

Scardafella are small pigeon birds. Both species reach a body length of 22 centimeters. Their body size is between that of a diamond and a laughing dove .

As is characteristic of American pigeons, their shape is compact. The plumage lacks striking colors. Gray and brown tones with black spots and feather edges predominate. With the Inca pigeon only the forehead and the feathers in the middle of the chest are without narrow hems. In the pigeon all cover feathers have dark borders. Both types seem blocked by this.

distribution and habitat

The Inca pigeon occurs from Arizona and southern New Mexico over the central area of Texas and Central America to the north of Costa Rica and Nicaragua . The pigeon, on the other hand, is only native to South America and the Caribbean. It occurs in Brazil, Paraguay and on the north coast of Colombia, in Venezuela and on the Isla Margarita and Trinidad islands .

Both species use open terrain overgrown with trees or bushes as their habitat. Both can also be found on agricultural land and have also opened up human settlement areas. They can be seen in gardens and parks in cities and villages.

behavior

Both the Inca and the Pigeon spend a lot of time on the ground during the day. They eat seeds that they only look for on the ground. They stand up to sleep and rest. They build their nests in trees and bushes. The clutch consists of two white eggs. The breeding season is about 14 days. The nestlings fledge after 14 to 16 days.

species

The following two types are included in the Scardafella :
