La Chojlla (also Mina Chojlla ) is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

La Chojlla is a mining settlement in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Yanacachi in the Sud Yungas province . The village is located at an altitude of 2270  m on the Río Takesi , a right tributary of the Río Unduavi , which leads over the Río Boopi to the Río Beni .

geography

La Chojlla is located in the Bolivian Yungas on the eastern slope of the high mountain ridge of the Cordillera Real . The region has a distinctive time-of-day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than in the course of the seasons.

The annual average temperature of the region is 12 ° C, the monthly values fluctuate only insignificantly between almost 10 ° C in June / July and almost 14 ° C in November / December (see Yapacani climate diagram). The annual precipitation is about 1000 mm, the monthly precipitation is between about 10 mm in the months of June and July and a little more than 150 mm from December to February.

Transport network

La Chojlla is located 157 kilometers east of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 3 leads north-east for 60 kilometers to Unduavi , from there the unpaved Ruta 25 branches off to Chulumani in a south-easterly direction and follows the course of the Río Unduavi. After about 25 kilometers, a side road leads to the right over the Yanacachi, which is situated on a ridge, to La Chojlla .

population

The population of the village was subject to significant fluctuations in the past two decades, due to the sales situation of the mine there:

economy

The center of the village is the " La Chojlla " mine , in which tin and tungsten ores have been mined since at least 1940 . The main tunnel of the mine is the Carmen tunnel on the bottom of the same name , the mouth of which is next to the main road. The mining areas below the Carmen floor are accessed by a seigeren blind shaft , in which the ore is extracted in the classic ridge construction and conveyed with track-bound mining vehicles . The mines above the Carmen sole are accessed with a sloping shaft with a cable car . Extraction with trackless technology takes place on these upper levels: The Chojlla mine is one of the first mines in Bolivia in which trackless technology was introduced (so-called laud-haul-dump operation (LHD) with loaders ). There is an underground workshop on one of the floors for repairs to the trackless vehicles. While the International Mining Company (IMCO) operates on the lower levels, independent (probably cooperatively organized) miners work on the higher levels - however, the LHD operation no longer seems to be functioning there.

The water of the Río Takesi (also: Río Taquesi) is dammed by a dam below the mining settlement. In 2002 a hydropower plant with an electrical output of 35 megawatts was completed there.
