Bradley Carnell (born January 21, 1977 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African football player .
He has been an assistant coach at the New York Red Bulls since 2017 .
Career
The left-footed midfielder began his football career at the South African Wits University Johannesburg, from 1997 he played for the Premier Soccer league team Kaizer Chiefs in his hometown.
VfB Stuttgart
Carnell was discovered in 1997 with the Kaizer Chiefs by Dirk Dufner , who was staying in South Africa as part of his legal training and became aware of Carnell there. After Dufner was later active in the management of the German Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart under coach Winfried Schäfer , Carnell was finally signed by the Stuttgart team after a trial training session. In his first Bundesliga season , Carnell then played 20 games in which he was able to score two goals and occupied eleventh place in the final table with VfB, who was now in danger of relegation. In the following season Carnell then contributed with a goal in 24 games to reach the Intertoto Cup , before he played again in the 2000/01 season in 20 missions against the threatened relegation of the Swabians. Due to several injuries, however, Carnell subsequently lost his place in the Stuttgart team and completed only twelve in the 2001/02 season , and one year later only six missions for VfB, which he then left for Borussia Mönchengladbach .
Borussia Monchengladbach
In Mönchengladbach, too, Carnell was subsequently unable to establish himself as a regular player. In the 2003/04 season he played only 18 games, a year later he only made six appearances for Borussia.
Karlsruher SC and Hansa Rostock
In January 2005 Carnell moved to Karlsruher SC in the 2nd Bundesliga . In this, the South African continuously developed into a top performer, initially playing 13 games in the second half of the season and 23 games in the following season 2005/06 , before making a significant contribution to KSC's promotion to the Bundesliga with six goals in 29 appearances in 2007. Due to injuries, among other things, he only played 28 Bundesliga games in the following two seasons. After the KSC was relegated from the Bundesliga after the 2008/09 season , he left the club and joined the second division competitor Hansa Rostock .
With Rostock, Carnell took 16 place in the table after a total of 19 appearances at the end of the 2009/10 season and thus had to compete in two relegation games against Ingolstadt against relegation to the third division . This lost Carnells team and thus rose for the first time in the third division.
Supersport United
In July 2010 Carnell moved back to his home country to Supersport United . On August 26, 2011, he announced his retirement from the football business.
National team
Carnell was able to recommend himself for the national team of his home country due to his performances at VfB Stuttgart and took part with this both in the African Cup of Nations in 2002 in Mali and in the World Cup in 2002 in Japan and South Korea. Although he was eliminated from the World Cup with his team after three preliminary rounds, Carnell was now a permanent member of the national team in his country and was used in numerous friendly and qualifying games.
Carnell was not nominated for the 2010 World Cup in his home country South Africa .
