George Koumantarakis (born March 27, 1974 in Athens ) is a former South African football player of Greek descent.
George Koumantarakis grew up in Durban , South Africa, although he was born in Athens . There he began his football career with AmaZulu Durban and Manning Rangers Durban , with whom he won the 1997 South African championship. The following season he played for Supersport United Pretoria and became South African top scorer. On April 6, 1997, he also came against the Congo for his first appearance in the South African national football team .
In 1998 Koumantarakis went to Europe and initially joined FC Luzern . After only one season, he moved to FC Basel , where he played for four and a half years and had his most successful period. In 2002 he won the Swiss championship and the cup with the club. He was also in the squad of the South African national team for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. There he was substituted on for all three South African players. In total, he came to twelve appearances in the national team in his career.
In early 2003 Koumantarakis moved to the English club Preston North End , before moving to Germany in 2004. There he first joined the second division promoted FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . Although he always showed good approaches in his few missions there, he was repeatedly thrown back by injuries. In total, he played only six games for Erfurt, in which he scored two goals. After the descent of the Thuringians Koumantarakis moved to the league competitor SpVgg Greuther Fürth . Since he could not play there due to an injury, his contract was terminated in November 2005. Koumantarakis is now back playing in his home country South Africa, with the Cape Town Spurs .
