Dane O'Brian Richards (born December 14, 1983 in Montego Bay ) is a Jamaican football player on the position of a wing and attacking player . He currently plays for Miami FC .
Career
Start in Jamaica and the USA
Richards began his active career as a professional footballer in 2001 with Seba United in the Jamaican National Premier League , the top division of his home country. In 2003 he came to the United States , where he went to San Jacinto College in Texas . By his departure in 2004, he had a total of 45 goals, including 25 goals as a sophomore . At college, he holds two unbroken records with 45 goals in his entire college days and 25 goals in one season. In 2004 he was awarded the title of National Junior College Player of the Year . In 2005, Richards continued his career at Clemson University in Clemson , South Carolina . With the Clemson Tigers , he managed twelve hits and eight assists in 2005. During the season he scored some game-winning goals and was honored a few times. Among other things, he was mentioned in the All-ACC Tournament Team , in the Soccer America Team of the Week (November 8, 2005) and in the NCAA Final Four Team . Furthermore, on November 7th, 2005 he was named ACC Player of the Week . Richards was also on the watch list for the Hermann Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best college player or the best college player.
The time with the New York Red Bulls
His professional career began on January 12, 2007 when he was drafted in the second round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as the 19th pick to the New York Red Bulls . He made his MLS debut almost three months later, on April 7th, when he played against the Columbus Crew . Just a week later he made his first assist for his teammate Clint Mathis . On May 5, Richards scored his first major league soccer goal. After starting 27 of 28 games in his rookie year, scoring two goals and making six assists, he was nominated for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award . There he made it to the final, where he was defeated by Maurice Edu in the end . The 2008 season started similarly to the previous season. In total, Richards had three championship goals and six assists. On July 19, 2008 during the game against Los Angeles Galaxy , he injured his hip flexor , so that he was out for three games. After that he was used in all four play-off games of his club and was awarded the MLS Cup Playoffs Player of the Week within the league . At the MLS Cup in 2008, he and his team made it to the final, where he is the only player in the history of the New York Red Bulls to assist in an MLS Cup final. The game was lost 3-1; the goal for the Red Bulls was scored by John Wolyniec. For the first time in their club history, the Columbus crew left the field as winners. Within the team, Richards was named Young Player of the Year .
Vancouver Whitecaps
On July 13, 2012, Richards moved to the Vancouver Whitecaps . The Red Bulls received Sébastien Le Toux and a transfer fee in exchange for the Jamaican. In total, he was on the pitch 12 times for the Canadians before moving to England at the end of the season.
Change to Europe
Already on August 26th 2012 it was confirmed that Richards will move to England to FC Burnley at the end of the 2012 season . After a deployment in an FA Cup and a league game, he could not confirm the performance and was loaned to the Norwegian first division club FK Bodø / Glimt on April 4, 2013 . There he was able to assert himself and in the summer of 2013 moved permanently to the Norwegians. In total he played 55 times for Bodø / Glimt.
Return to the USA
On March 7, 2015, it was announced that Richards was returning to the New York Red Bulls.
International
In the national team of Jamaica Richards made his debut in 2002 at the age of 18 years. While still a student, he came to another assignment in the dress of the Jamaican national team. His successes in the 2007 season did not go unnoticed and so Richards made it back to the national team, where he played in all five games of his home country in the CFU Caribbean Cup 2008 and was able to take the trophy in the end. In the following year he was part of the Jamaican squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 , but only made a five-minute short appearance against El Salvador in the preliminary round. He also took part with the team in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .
