Björn Westerberg (born February 10, 1945 - April 15, 2014 in Sundbyberg ) was a Swedish football coach . With IFK Göteborg he won the Swedish championship twice.

Career

Westerberg took over the coaching position at Åtvidabergs FF in 1979 in the Allsvenskan . With the team of the two-time champions around players like Glenn Martindahl , Conny Torstensson , Stephan Kullberg and Thomas Wernerson , he was regularly placed in the lower midfield before he was inherited by Bo-Leine Larsson . Before the 1983 season he was hired assisted by Kjell Pettersson as the successor to Sven-Göran Eriksson and Gunder Bengtsson at IFK Göteborg , who had led the club to national and international titles. Although the club posted after the success in the UEFA Cup in 1981/82 with Glenn Strömberg and dan corneliusson the departure of key players, with new items Stephan Kullberg, Roland Nilsson and Steve Gardner defended the club as third in regulation time by final success against Östers IF the Championship title. In the following season, the club dominated the season and moved back into the championship final. Opponent IFK Norrköping was clearly defeated in two games with a 5-1 and a 2-0 victory.

At his own request, Westerberg ended his engagement with IFK Göteborg after two years and was inherited by his predecessor Gunder Bengtsson. He went to the second division club Djurgårdens IF , who had missed promotion to Allsvenskan in previous years under Hans Backe as third or second in the table. The team around Stefan Rehn , Ulf Lundberg and Teddy Sheringham , who was loaned to Sweden by Millwall FC , won their season under his leadership. In the promotion games, the team met the Gothenburg club GAIS . After both the first and second legs ended goalless, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. The Stockholm club prevailed in a dramatic penalty duel. In the first division season 1986 , the club slipped after a good start to the season in the relegation area and had to relegate as bottom of the table at the end of the season, whereupon Tommy Söderberg took over the coaching office.

Westerberg was later active in the youth work of Svenska Fotbollförbundet .
