Kjell Pettersson (born July 23, 1947 ) is a Swedish football coach . After having worked as an assistant coach several times in winning titles in Swedish and international football, he was temporarily a full-time coach in higher-class Swedish football himself .

Career

Pettersson moved into the coaching staff of IFK Göteborg in 1982 when Sven-Göran Eriksson had left the club for Portugal and the former assistant Gunder Bengtsson took over the coaching office. At the end of the season he won the Swedish championship with the team around Thomas Wernersson , Glenn Hysén , Ruben Svensson , Stig Fredriksson and Glenn Strömberg . After Bengtsson left the club at the end of the year, he worked as an assistant under his successor Björn Westerberg . Even under his leadership, the team stayed on the road to success and repeated the championship in the 1983 and 1984 seasons . Nevertheless, Bengtsson returned in early 1985. While further successes remained in the championship, he moved with the team in the final of the 1986/87 UEFA Cup . There the team prevailed after goals from Stefan Pettersson to a 1-0 win in the first leg and Lennart Nilsson with a 1-1 draw in the second leg with a goal from John Clark and won the European Cup for the second time. At the end of the year he also won the championship title in Sweden with the club.

With the European Cup title in great demand abroad, Bengtsson left IFK Gothenburg again in the summer of 1988. This time Pettersson moved up as his successor to the main responsible coach. Although he reached the championship finals with the team, but failed there in the semi-finals at Djurgårdens IF . The 1989 season was disappointing, as the club, being seventh in the table, clearly missed the finals. They parted ways and the former youth coach Roger Gustafsson became his successor.

Pettersson went to IK Brage , with whom he relegated to the second division at the end of the 1990 season. He only missed direct recovery with the team in the promotion round against Helsingborgs IF . In the following season she dominated the spring series with ten wins in 14 games and thus qualified for the autumn round of the Allsvenskan 1992 . Here she reached the league in the elite series as third in the table. In the 1993 season , the team had no chance and was relegated. Thereupon Pettersson gave up his coaching position and moved up to the head of sports.

In 1996 Pettersson returned to the coaching bench and looked after the second division club BK Häcken . In his second year with the Gothenburg club, the club was runner-up in its second division season and thus qualified for the relegation games . After a 1-1 draw on their own against Västerås SK , the team made it to the Allsvenskan with a 4-2 away win. The direct relegation was followed as the season winner in the south of the renewed rise. Although this time he stayed with the club in the first division, he left the club and handed over the coaching post to Torbjörn Nilsson .

In 2001, Pettersson became the first coach of the newly founded FC Trollhättan as part of the bundling of local forces . In the following season he led the club to the championship in Division 2 Västra Götaland . In the promotion round to the Superettan , the team failed after a 3-2 home win and a 1-2 away defeat due to the away goals rule at Falkenbergs FF . In the following years, the club only reached places in the front midfield without being able to intervene in the promotion race. So they parted ways at the end of 2003 and he returned to IFK Göteborg as an assistant coach. There he worked under Bosse Johansson and his successor Arne Erlandsen . When he gave up his position in September 2006, he moved up as coach together with Stefan Landberg on an interim basis until the end of the season . After the end of the season he took an offer from the Norwegian club Fløy IL . He looked after the third division club from Kristiansand for three seasons.

At the end of 2009 Pettersson returned to Sweden. He signed a two-year contract with the Gothenburg club GAIS to support Alexander Axén in Allsvenskan. After Axén's resignation on July 22, 2012, he initially took over his duties on an interim basis. A little later, Jan Mak took over as coach, but was inherited by the previous junior coach Benjamin Westman in early October . After Pettersson had worked as a coaching assistant again, he moved back a step after the renewed coaching and was henceforth responsible for the individual development of players at GAIS.

After his contract with GAIS expired at the end of 2014, Pettersson moved as a coaching assistant to league competitor Ljungskile SK , where he worked as head coach Tor-Arne Fredheim . At the end of the second division season in 2016 , the team rose to the bottom of the table in the third division Division 1 , while Fredheim then had to leave, Pettersson remained with the club.
