Roger Gustafsson (born February 29, 1952 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish football coach . After a playing career as a defender , which had made it possible for him to play a number of first division appearances and mainly in the lower division, he won the Swedish championship and the national cup several times as a coach of IFK Göteborg . He is particularly remembered as the coach of the team that started as an outsider in the group stage of the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League as a league leader ahead of FC Barcelona , Manchester United and Galatasaray Istanbul and made it into the quarter-finals, where they failed at Bayern Munich . He later worked as a functionary, particularly in the youth sector.

Career

Player career

Gustafsson began his playing career with Gothenburg club BK Häcken . At the lower class appearing club, which commuted between fourth and fifth level in the early 1970s, he made those responsible for the higher class appearing local rivals GAIS attention. Before the start of the first division season in 1974 , he joined the club in the Allsvenskan . At the side of Kenneth Wessberg , Eine Fredriksson , Sten Pålsson and Nils Norlander , he was mainly a supplementary player and played nine first division appearances in his first season in Sweden's elite series. Although he scored his first league goal for the club in his second year, under coach Vilmos Varszegi he was still not part of the regular team and could not prevent the team from relegating to the second division.

Gustafsson then returned to his hometown club BK Häcken, which was promoted to the third division in the same year. Here he was one of the pillars who helped the club after an eighth place in the first year of the 1977 relay championship in Division 3 Nordvästra Götaland . In the promotion round he prevailed with the club despite a defeat against IK Brage before Degerfors IF and Motala AIF as second in the group. However, after the success he left the club and returned to GAIS. Once again he was only used irregularly at the club that placed behind BK Häcken in the two years he was back in the club. He then returned to BK Häcken again.

Coaching career

1983 Gustafsson took over a coaching position in the youth department of IFK Göteborg . After the team led by Sven-Göran Eriksson and Gunder Bengtsson in the 1980s to win the UEFA Cup twice under coach Kjell Pettersson in the 1989 season slipped seventh in the table into lower midfield and missed the championship finals, he moved ahead of the start of the 1990 playing time as coach of the first division club. After his coaching debut in the Allsvenskan failed with a 6-0 defeat against IFK Norrköping , he led the team around Thomas Ravelli , Magnus Johansson , Kaj Eskelinen , Stefan Rehn and Pontus Kåmark as leaders of the regular season in the finals. There he reached the final against IFK Norrköping and retaliated with a 3-0 away win for the opening defeat. With a 0-0 draw at Ullevi , he and the team secured the championship title in the second leg.

Also in the following season Gustafsson dominated the championship with the team and got the double with a 3-2 win after extra time in the final of the national cup against AIK . After missing the group stage in the 1991/92 European Cup , the club beat Beşiktaş Istanbul and Lech Posen in the first round of the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League and was promptly among the top eight clubs at the start of the newly created competition represented. After two defeats against group winners AC Milan with no loss points and in the final, meaningless game against FC Porto , he missed the final in the Munich Olympic Stadium as runner-up in the group . Nevertheless, the year 1993 was not without title success, for the third time in four years IFK Göteborg won the championship title. So represented in the qualification for the Champions League 1994/95, in which Sparta Prague was defeated, the team around Jesper Blomqvist , Magnus Erlingmark , Stefan Pettersson and Joachim Björklund caused a sensation in the group stage. Although the opening match against Manchester United was lost, the team then sat down with four wins in a row - a 2-1 home win against FC Barcelona, 1-0 wins against Galatasaray Istanbul in both Sweden and Turkey and a 3 : 1 home win over Manchester United - to the top of the table. Even in the final game at Camp Nou , Gustafsson's eleven were undefeated and drew 1-1. Also in the two quarter-finals against the German representative FC Bayern Munich no game was lost. In the Munich Olympic Stadium there was a goalless draw before Alexander Zickler and Christian Nerlinger shot the German club in the front in the second leg . Substitute Mats Lilienberg and Mikael Martinsson evened the score, but due to the away goals rule , the Swedish team missed the semi-finals. After he had led the team again to the championship at the end of the 1995 season , he retired and handed over the coaching post to Mats Jingblad .

Functional activity and brief return as a trainer

Gustafsson returned to youth work. On the one hand, he continued to work for IFK Göteborg, on the other hand, in collaboration with Svenska Fotbollförbundet and the Gothenburg Football Association, he developed a concept to improve youth work in Sweden, which was published under the name "Fotbollens hemligheter". He later became sports director at IFK Göteborg.

When in the course of the 2002 season the team was in danger of relegation, Gustafsson inherited Stefan Lundin as coach at the end of August that year . Until the end of the season in office, the team survived the relegation games against local rivals Västra Frölunda IF under his leadership and remained first class. Subsequently, the former coach of the Danish national team Bosse Johansson became the new coach, Gustafsson returned to management. As a junior coordinator, he was one of the founding fathers of Änglagårdsskolan in 2007 , which, following the example of La Masia , is to promote parallel school and football training at IFK Göteborg.

Alongside Pia Sundhage , Jörgen Pettersson and Magnus Wislander , Gustafsson was inducted into the Gothenburg Sports Hall of Fame in May 2010 .
