Mikael Martinsson (born March 29, 1966 ) is a Swedish former football player . The striker , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 1991 , won the Swedish championship four times with IFK Göteborg .

Career

Martinsson started playing football in the youth of Vasalunds IF . For the club he made his debut in the 1983 season in the second division. While he established himself with the team in the middle of the table, he played his way into the Swedish U-21 selection . After the end of the season 1987 he moved on loan for the winter break to the Spanish club CD Castellón in the Segunda División . On the side of players like Enrique Saura , Francisco García Hernández and Đorđe Vujkov , he played 25 games in the second-highest Spanish division until his return to Sweden in early April 1988.

Before the start of the first division season in 1989 , Martinsson moved to Djurgårdens IF in the Allsvenskan . Used eight times under coach Tommy Söderberg in his first year, he advanced to become a regular under his successor Lennart Wass . At the side of Glenn Schiller , Anders Almgren and Jens Fjellström , he moved with the team in the summer of 1990 in the final of the national cup , in which BK Häcken was defeated. With good performances in the first half of the following year, he also played his way into the national team. In June 1991 he made his debut on the occasion of a preparatory tournament for the 1992 European Championships in a 2: 3 defeat after extra time against the Soviet Union in the national jersey. As a result, he was used irregularly primarily as a substitute, but missed the leap into the European championship squad.

At the end of the 1992 season Martinsson occupied only one relegation place with Djurgårdens IF. He then moved within Allsvenskan to IFK Göteborg . Under coach Roger Gustafsson he established himself as a regular in the attack. With nine goals this season tied with Magnus Erlingmark's best internal goalscorer, he won the championship title at the end of the 1993 season. So he had played his way back to the national team, in November he was on the field - one last time - as a substitute in the 3-2 win over Finland as part of the qualification for the 1994 World Cup in the national jersey. In the following season he was the only club-internal leader with 13 goals this season, behind top scorer Niclas Kindvall , Mirosław Kubisztal , Dick Lidman , Jörgen Pettersson and Mattias Jonson he was sixth in the league . Nevertheless, it was enough to successfully defend the title in the championship.

In the Champions League season 1994/95 Martinsson surprised with IFK Göteborg. Qualified for the group stage after successes over Sparta Prague , the team moved into the quarter-finals as leaders in front of FC Barcelona , Manchester United and Galatasaray Istanbul . There she failed according to the away goals rule at Bayern Munich , Martinsson's goal for the 2-2 equalizer in the second leg shortly before the end was not enough given the 0-0 draw at the Olympic Stadium in Munich . Although he was not nearly as successful as a goalscorer in the following seasons as in previous years, it was enough to win two more championship titles.

After Martinsson was increasingly moved into the second member under coach Mats Jingblad , he joined the league rivals IF Elfsborg during the 1998 season . With the club he took places in the middle of the table before returning to his home club Vasalunds IF in 2001. With the fourth division, he rose to the third division before ending his active career in 2002.

Martinsson became an amateur coach immediately after his active time. After KF Velebit , he looked after Gårda BK and Stenungsunds IF . In November 2008 he took over the coaching position at the fourth division Jonsereds IF .
