Glenn Schiller (born March 27, 1960 ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender , whose brother Dennis Schiller was also active as a football player, was part of the IFK Göteborg team that won the 1981/82 UEFA Cup .

Career

Schiller made his debut in 1979 for the IFK Göteborg competition team , which was runner-up behind Halmstads BK at the end of the season . In the same year he moved to the side of Olle Nordin , Ralf Edström and Torbjörn Nilsson in the cup final, in which the league rival Åtvidabergs FF was outclassed with a 6-1 final win. In the following years he came regularly to play, but stood as a supplementary player in the shadow of the defensive row around Glenn Hysén and Conny Karlsson . In the 1982 season he was still one of the outstanding protagonists, when he was honored as a master player with 21 appearances in regular time after his successes in the championship finals and again won the cup final. With IFK Göteborg, which was plagued by economic problems, he was also successful outside of Sweden. With the team around goalkeeper Thomas Wernersson , Ruben Svensson and Glenn Strömberg , he moved into the final after victories over Valkeakosken Haka , SK Sturm Graz , Dinamo Bucharest , FC Valencia and 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Against the favored Hamburger SV , a late goal by Tord Holmgren decided the first leg with a 1-0 home win, with Schiller playing as a substitute in the second half. Also in the second leg he was initially intended as a substitute. Shortly before kick-off he went to the bathroom and was finally locked in the cabin. When Glenn Hysén injured himself after a few minutes, coach Sven-Göran Eriksson wanted to replace him with Schiller. Just released from the dressing room, he was substituted on and, as a defender, contributed to the implementation of the Gothenburg tactics that had made them unbeatable in the course of the European Cup season - consistent counterattacking from a safe chain of defense - after goals from Dan Corneliusson , Torbjörn Nilsson and Stig Fredriksson served as the cornerstone to a 3-0 away win and thus led to a Swedish team's first European Cup triumph.

After the successes, several players and the coach Eriksson and his successor Gunder Bengtsson had been poached by foreign clubs by the end of 1982 , Schiller moved into the regular formation under the new coach Björn Westerberg . Under his leadership he won the Swedish championship three times in a row until 1984. Under returnees Gunder Bengtsson, he moved back into the second tier in the 1985 season , whereupon he joined the first division promoted Djurgårdens IF together with teammate Stephan Kullberg at the end of the season . The direct relegation was followed by an immediate ascent to the Allsvenskan. With him as a regular player, the club established itself in the first half of the table in the following years. In 1990 he also won a title with DIF, in the cup final the team trained by Lennart Wass around Jens Fjellström , Anders Almgren and Mikael Martinsson won against BK Häcken . In the previous year still represented in the championship finals, there was only one relegation place in the 1992 season . Despite a 3-1 first leg success for the Stockholm club against Degerfors IF in the relegation games, the competitor prevailed after goals from Ulf Ottosson and Henrik Berger with a 2-0 second leg win. Schiller then ended his professional career and later continued to work in the football industry as a player's agent.
