Wilhelm Zimolong

Wilhelm Bernhard Zimolong (born May 12, 1922 in Elberfeld , † March 11, 1979 in Essen ) was a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor.

Life

Zimolong grew up in Gladbeck . He was a student at the Lamberti School from 1928 to 1936. From 1940 to mid-July 1945 he did military service and took private painting lessons after his release. From July 1948 to May 1949 he attended the painting class at the Folkwang School in Essen-Werden. At the end of November 1949 he was accepted into the Ruhrland Artists Association in Essen. In 1950 he became a member of the Gelsenkirchner Künstlerbund, whose chairman he was from 1977 until his death in 1979. In 1952 Zimolong married his wife Sigrid. The marriage had three children. In 1952 he became a member of the Vestische Künstlerbund Recklinghausen. A city grant from the city of Gladbeck enabled him to take part in the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg in 1955 . Oskar Kokoschka with his “School of Seeing”, the sculptor Giacomo Manzú and national prize winner Professor Slavi Soucek shaped Zimolong's painting and work from now on. In 1956 he again took part in the "Summer Academy" under Kokoschka, after having trained with Professor Soucek in his graphics institute in the spring of the same year. Zimolong worked from 1964 to 1979 as a VHS lecturer in Gladbeck and from 1966 to 1979 as an art teacher at the secondary school and the adult education center in Dorsten .

Zimolong designed murals and sculptures for the city of Gladbeck (steel sculpture in front of the VHS house; Realschule, 1961), the city of Oberhausen, the Nordstern colliery (kindergarten) and the Brand family, close friends and art patrons from Saarlouis. A major sponsor of Zimolong's works was Wilhelm Nettmann, at the time head of the Märkisches Museum in Witten., Who exhibits his work twice. Since then, the estate has been managed by his widow, Sigrid Zimolong, who still organizes exhibitions and vernissages in the existing studio as well as in galleries and public buildings / rooms.

Wilhelm Zimolong Society

After his death in March 1979, art lovers founded the “Wilhelm Zimolong Society” in 1980 , which in 1981 published a complete list of his artistic work. Up to and including 2010, the society awarded sponsorship prizes for young artists from the Ruhr area , each with a special prize from the city of Gladbeck. The society also organizes exhibitions of Zimolong's work as well as traveling exhibitions for the participants in the sponsorship awards. The price has been awarded by the Gladbeck Tourist Office since 2010. The winners of the Wilhelm-Zimolong-Förderpreis were among others:
