Judith Samen is best known for her staged photographs. Your images are charged with meaning through economical but precise compositions. Because of this, they have often been associated with 17th century Dutch genre painting. What is striking is a sublime seriousness that overlays the absurdly banal scenes. Although the motifs superficially suggest topics such as nude and portrait photography, food or the relationship between mother and child, Judith Samen's works primarily question image mechanisms, the boundary between art and banality and the concept of art itself.
