Wolfgang Schmidt (concept artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Schmidt (* 1966 in Witten ) is a German artist .

Artistic approach

Since studying object design in Dortmund (1988–1993), the artist Wolfgang Schmidt has been working with his greatly reduced, elongated human figure. With their help, he tried out the possibilities of artistic creation for almost 20 years without ever changing his motif. It is programmatic that only the restriction to the recurring motif gives the artist unlimited freedom of design. With his figure, which is never the same but always similar to itself, everything seems possible: it exists as an individual figure in every artistic medium, it can be transformed, it can be divided, divided, and bent. Wolfgang Schmidt's figure appears in groups and thus conveys reflections on a profound topic in our society: the relationship between the individual and the masses. Nevertheless, the figure is abstract enough to be considered a formal element and become part of experiments on series, rhythms and sequences.
