Haus Herbede is a manor in the Ruhr Valley and is located in the Herbede district of Witten not far from Lake Kemnader .

The former of moats surrounded the main house has a mauerumwehrte bailey and is used as a public meeting place and gallery today. The Witten registry office maintains a wedding room there. There is a restaurant in the medieval vaulted cellar , which has been closed since October 2016.

history

The beginnings of the facility go back to the 11th century. In 1225/27 it was owned by Arnold von Didinghofen, who received the Herbede rule from the Kaufungen monastery as a fief . From 1311 the house was inhabited by the von Elverfeldt family, whose members managed it as castle men.

During the 14th century the complex was fortified by replacing the wooden structures with a stone house and an adjoining tower.

Around 1500 Haus Herbede was badly damaged by a large fire. During investigations in the 1980s, all kinds of inventory, weapons and armor were found in the basement. These had probably fallen through the ceilings in the fire without being recovered later.

Wedding room

In 1540, a new building with a basement was built, which was connected to existing stone houses around 1563, so that Herbede House was redesigned into a four-wing complex with a central courtyard . For centuries the Herbeder property also included Haus Villigst , Haus Blumenau , from the beginning of the 18th century Haus Berghofen , from 1869 Haus Ruhr and from 1882 Haus Kotten . The Protestant Herbeder line of Elverfeldt part of this extensive property until its expiry in 1889, when he carried heredities succession to the baronial families of Rheinbaben and Gemmingen fell.

After Haus Herbede had been used as a residence for employees of a neighboring iron processing company in the 20th century and fell into disrepair in the final phase of this use, it became the property of Freizeitzentrum Kemnade GmbH, the sponsoring company for the construction and operation of Lake Kemnade, in 1985 Leisure and recreational facilities in the shores of the lake.
