The ABW - Academy for Business Administration and World Trade Languages ​​Society for Vocational Education and Training mbH was founded in 1956 in Mannheim and 1957 in Stuttgart under the name Institute for Rational Office Work and World Trade Languages as a private educational institution and was later mainly business and foreign language oriented.

In 1956 the academy was a founding member of the Federal Association of Secretariat and Office Management bSb , based in Berlin, and in 1964 of the international organization ESA - European Schools for Higher Education in Administration and Management , based in Vienna.

The first international ESA diplomas for the ESA European Secretary were awarded in 1965 at the ABW Academy in Mannheim .

The academy was one of the first academies in Germany to cooperate with British partner universities to enable their graduates to complete a shortened postgraduate course to obtain an English bachelor's degree.

In 2004, Northumbria University in Newcastle established the postgraduate course for "Bachelor in International Business Management" at the ABW Academy in Mannheim and Stuttgart, the only locations in Germany, and integrated it into the three-year courses of the ABW Academy.

The Euroakademie Stuttgart later emerged from the ABW and is a member of the Euro Schools Organization .
