Ari-Juhani Hjelm (born February 24, 1962 in Tampere ), better known as Ari "Zico" Hjelm , is a former Finnish football player and is currently active as a coach of the Finnish first division club Tampere United .
Career
Hjelm, who played in the position of striker , started his career in his home country with Ilves Tampere . In 1988 he moved to Germany to the then Bundesliga club Stuttgarter Kickers . With them he was relegated and played another season in the second division in Stuttgart. He then moved back to Ilves Tampere, before he dared a second attempt in Germany and played for the second division FC St. Pauli from 1992 to 1994. Then he went to HJK Helsinki , for which he ran up until 1996.
Hjelm also played 100 caps for Finland . He held the national record before Jari Litmanen surpassed him in 2006. He replaced Hjelm, who has 20 international goals, as the association's record goal scorer. Since FIFA has not rated international matches at the Olympic Games as A-internationals since 1999, Hjelm is only listed with 93 internationals and 18 goals in official statistics.
Hjelm was voted Finland's Footballer of the Year in 1987 . At the end of his career he was also appointed honorary captain of the Finnish national team.
After finishing his career he became a coach and has won three Finnish championships so far.
