Hans-Walter Georgii

Hans-Walter Georgii (born November 3, 1924 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 23, 2018 in Bad Homburg ) was a German meteorologist .

Life

Hans-Walter Georgii's father Walter Georgii was the head of the Frankfurt weather service. Hans-Walter Georgii graduated from high school and was drafted into the Air Force in 1942 . After his release from British captivity, he studied meteorology, physics and physical chemistry in Munich and Frankfurt from 1948 . After a semester with his father at the Universidad de Mendoza , Argentina, he received his doctorate in Frankfurt in 1953 , became an assistant in 1958 and completed his habilitation in 1959. In 1964, Georgii took a position as scientific advisor and professor at the University of Münster , and in 1965 he was appointed to the chair appointed for meteorology at the University of Cologne . Two months later, he accepted the chair for Atmospheric Physics at the University of Frankfurt. For many years Georgi was the budgetary officer of the natural science faculty and 1974/1975 dean of the geosciences department. In 1993 Georgii retired.

From around 1965 to 1990 Georgii was also the Scientific Director of the “Climate Physiological Station” of the Bernhard Foundation in St. Moritz , Switzerland.

Georgii researching application-oriented for sulfur dioxide - smog , for long-range transport of air pollutants , the acid and heavy metal deposition, forest damage and summer smog . In 1968 he and the Mainz researchers Christian Junge and Kurt Bullrich founded the Collaborative Research Center 73 “Atmospheric Trace Substances” funded by the DFG .

Georgii was chairman of the German Meteorological Society from 1985 to 1988 and became an honorary member in 1997. He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
