The Quintus is a single-seat glider made by Schempp-Hirth with a wingspan of 23 meters and flaps. It will initially only as a self-starter under the name Quintus M offered.
history
The Quintus was presented to the public for the first time at the AERO 2011 in Friedrichshafen, together with the Lange Antares 23E from Lange Aviation . The two models were designed in close cooperation between Schempp-Hirth and Lange Aviation; they mainly differ in terms of fuselage, outer wing and auxiliary engine. The wing concept was created by Lange Aviation and Loek Boermans ; the structural design, ballast system and control system are also from Lange Aviation. The outer wings and winglets of the Quintus are by Mark Maughmer . In October 2011, before the first flight, Lange Aviation began series production of the inner wings, while the outer wings and winglets of the Quintus are produced by Schempp-Hirth.
The first flight of the Quintus took place on December 23, 2011 at Hahnweide airfield , pilot was Tilo Holighaus . The actual flight tests began on January 11, 2012.
construction
The wings with a super-elliptical floor plan and a span of 23 meters contain nine coordinated and merging laminar profiles . They have a high aspect ratio and contain tanks for up to 250 liters of water ballast to increase the wing loading . The Quintus was specifically designed for a high wing loading: With an approved take-off weight of 850 kg and a wing area of only 14.45 m 2 , the maximum wing loading is 58.8 kg / m 2 .
The hull and cockpit were completely redesigned by Schempp-Hirth.
A SOLO two-stroke engine serves as the drive. The star wheel is integrated into the rudder and can therefore be steered.
