The Lange Aviation GmbH was founded in 1996 as Lange Flugzeugbau GmbH founded. The company is located in Zweibrücken . Lange develops, builds and sells motor gliders and gliders . The company founder and managing director is Axel Lange. The company currently has 42 employees.

Long Antares 20E

To date (2009), Lange is the only company in the world to build and sell a self-launching high-performance motor glider with electric drive, the Lange Antares 20E , of which the first examples were delivered in 2004.

The new drive system works with lithium-ion batteries , inverters and asynchronous external rotor motors . Flight testing began in 1999 in a Glaser-Dirks DG-800 B, internally Lange LF 20 E called. The demonstration machine took off for its maiden flight on May 7, 1999 . With this sample, the principle usability of the concept could be proven.

On May 28, 2006, the Lange Antares 18S , a glider in the 18 m class, made its maiden flight.

In July 2007, the insolvency proceedings were opened against Lange Flugzeugbau GmbH ; the insolvency administrator continued business operations. At the end of September 2007, Lange Fiberverbundtechnik GmbH acquired all of the tangible and intangible assets of Lange Flugzeugbau GmbH . It continued production of the Antares series at the Zweibrücken airfield. The company has been operating under the name Lange Aviation GmbH since 2008 .

On December 23, 2011 the first flight of the further development Lange Antares 23E took place. This aircraft essentially has a wing that has been extended by three meters and a significantly increased take-off weight. It was developed in cooperation with Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau and has the same inner wing as the Schempp-Hirth Quintus .

In addition to the Antares 23E, Antares 20E and Antares 18S / T, Lange Aviation GmbH also builds the Antares DLR-H2 research aircraft with fuel cell propulsion for the DLR . In 2010, the company announced that it would test the successor Antares H3 with a wingspan of 23 meters and an expected range of up to 6,000 kilometers in 2011.
