Film and video editor

The film and video editor has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act since 1996 .

Duration of training and structure

The training period to become a film and video editor is usually three years. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school . It is a mono job without internal differentiation.

Work areas

Film and video editors are employed in public broadcasters , private broadcasters or companies that offer production and post-processing of film material. There they prepare picture and sound montages , execute them according to creative and dramaturgical aspects and create picture effects. The work is based on scripts , exposés, storyboards and treatments. They operate mixing consoles for image editing, synchronize speech, noises and music in film and sound documents and edit sound mixes. They also check and archive image and sound material. They carry out their work in close coordination with the direction and production . The activity is characterized by high adherence to deadlines.

The number of contracts in this training occupation is declining. While 48 new training contracts were concluded in 2008 , in 2009 there were only 36 contracts and in 2010 only 33 training contracts.

professional school

There are currently three transnational vocational schools in Germany:

  • State vocational school III in Fürth for Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate,
  • Upper level center for communication, information and media technology (KIM) in Berlin for Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well
  • the Farmsen vocational school in Hamburg.
