Frank Thring

Frank Thring (born May 11, 1926 in Melbourne , Victoria as Francis William Thring Jr. , † December 29, 1994 ibid) was an Australian film and theater actor .

life and career

Frank Thring, son of the film director FW Thring (1883-1936), began his career in radio and took on first roles in the Australian theater. After his breakthrough in his home country, he moved to England for a few years and then to Hollywood. From the end of the 1950s, Thring took on his first film and television roles, best known for his portrayal of two characters from the New Testament : In Ben Hur , the 1959 film that won eleven Oscars , he played Pontius Pilate in King of the Kings of 1961 Herod Antipas . He should also embody the character of Herod Antipas in the stage production of the play Salome .

However, Thring left Hollywood in the early 1960s and returned to Australia. He has appeared in numerous plays in Melbourne, from Shakespeare classics to modern socially critical plays. Thring also became known here through a recurring role in the Australian television series Skippy, the bush kangaroo . He gained international attention again in 1986 with the striking supporting role of the collector in Mad Max - Beyond the Thunder Dome .

The actor, who was very overweight in his later years, had an extravagant image in public, he was known for his sharp humor, dressed in black and wore a large ring chain. However, he always kept his private life shielded. Despite his homosexuality, he was briefly married to Joan Cunliffe in the 1950s because he had a desire to have children, but it never came true. Frank Thring died on 29 December 1994 at the age of 68 years to cancer .
