Tom Gries

Tom Gries (* 20th December 1922 in Chicago , Illinois as Thomas Steven Gries , † 3. January 1977 in Pacific Palisades , California ) was an American director and screenwriter .

Life

Gries studied at Georgetown University . During World War II , he served in the US Marines and after retirement worked as a reporter for a newspaper in Chicago. He began his career in the film business in 1952 as an associate producer . He also wrote screenplays and made his debut in 1954 with the film Serpent Island . In the 1960s in particular, he directed numerous episodes from a wide variety of television series, including for tennis rackets and cannons . Increasingly, he also made television productions, including films such as Helter Skelter from 1976, but also some feature films.

Gries shot with a wide variety of film stars, including Donald Sutherland , Charles Bronson and Charlton Heston, and Bruce Dern twice .

In 1964 and 1972 he was awarded an Emmy .

Tom Gries was married three times. His first wife from 1958 to 1960 was the actress Marla English. A child comes from this relationship. He was married to Alice King for the next three years, this marriage remained childless. In 1969 Gries married an actress again. The marriage with Yvonne Gilbert lasted six years and they had one child together.

He was unable to complete his last directorial work because he died of a heart attack while filming. Monte Hellman completed the project I am the greatest about Muhammad Ali in 1977.

Gries' son Jon Gries works as an actor.
