Kenneth McMillan (born July 2, 1932 in Brooklyn , New York City , † January 8, 1989 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actor and character actor .

Life

Kenneth McMillan is the son of truck driver Harry McMillan and his wife Margaret. McMillan came to acting relatively late, initially he was in the management of the Gimbels department store. However, at the age of 30, he decided to quit his secure job and start an acting career. He attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts acting school and received lessons from Uta Hagen and Irene Dailey . At the age of 41 he made his film debut in Sidney Lumet's police drama Serpico .

Career

With his corpulent stature and his rough face, he was usually used for rogue roles or as a grumpy grumpy bear with a soft core. He has also appeared on television several times and has guest roles in series such as Murder is Her Hobby , Use in Manhattan and Starsky & Hutch . His most popular role was that of the sadistic Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in David Lynch's science fiction film The Desert Planet .

In addition to his work in film and television, he also played theater, for example at the New York Shakespeare Festival and in the Broadway world premieres of Streamers by David Rabe and American Buffalo by David Mamet . He received an Obie Award in 1982 for his performance in David Blomquist's play Weekends Like Other People on Off-Broadway .

Kenneth McMillan died of liver failure on January 8, 1989, at the age of 56, shortly after filming for the comedy The Bank Trio was finished . He left behind his wife Kathryn McDonald, to whom he was married from 1969 until his death, and his daughter Alison McMillan , who is also an actress.
