Ludwig Johann Leichner (born March 30, 1836 in Mainz , † August 10, 1912 in Dahlem ) was a German opera singer ( baritone ) and a successful cosmetics manufacturer.

Life

Ludwig Leichner initially studied pharmacy at the University of Vienna and also worked as an intern in a pharmacy. He studied singing with the composer Heinrich Proch . He broke off his studies in chemistry for the time being after he initially got an engagement as a baritone in Bamberg under the stage name Raphael Carlo , later others in Magdeburg , Königsberg , Cologne and Stettin , where he sang mainly in operas by Richard Wagner .

At the beginning of the 1870s he decided to resume his chemistry studies, this time in Berlin with the inventor of the aniline dyes August Wilhelm von Hofmann . Based on his studies and his experience as a singer, he succeeded in inventing a lead - free make - up that was gratefully accepted and led to the foundation of the Leichner powder and make-up factory from 1873 , whose products were soon nationwide, after being presented at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878 and were celebrated and awarded at the trade exhibition in Berlin in 1879 and then also in international demand.

In 1899 the sculptor Eugen Boermel , who had already designed a theater auditorium for Leichner's company, made a bust of Leichner. In memory of his love for Wagner, Leichner had a Wagner memorial created by the sculptor Gustav Eberlein and erected in the Berlin zoo in 1903 . It was roofed over in 1987 to protect it from the weather.

Ludwig Leichner was buried in the Dahlem cemetery. His son successfully continued the company. It existed until 2003. Then the company Polyco in Beimerstetten took over the production under the name Leichner Kosmetik .
