John Francis Hylan
John Francis Hylan (* 20th April 1868 in Hunter , Greene County , New York ; † 12. January 1936 in Forest Hills , New York City ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1918 to 1925, he was the 96th Mayor of New York City for two terms . His nickname was Red Mike .
Life
Hylan was born to a farmer from Ireland in the small town of Hunter in Greene County , about 200 km north of New York City. He married young and left the farm dissatisfied to study law at the New York Law School in 1897 . After Hylan was unfairly dismissed from a railroad company, as he claims, he became a judge in Brooklyn . In 1917, Hylan won the mayoral election against the reformer John Purroy Mitchel . In 1921 Hylan was ill for a long time and was represented by George Murray Hulbert . After winning the 1921 election, he was defeated by Senator James J. Walker in 1925 . Hylan died of a heart attack at the age of 67 .
