John Purroy Mitchel (born July 19, 1879 in the Bronx , New York , †  July 6, 1918 in Lake Charles , Louisiana ) was an American politician . He was Mayor of New York City between 1914 and 1917 .

Career

John Mitchel attended public schools in his home country including Fordham Preparatory School . He then studied until 1899 at Columbia University belonging to Columbia College . After a subsequent law degree at the New York Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1902, he began to work in this profession. In 1906 he began working for the City of New York when he became an investigator into a corruption case involving John F. Ahearn , the borough president of Manhattan, was appointed. His investigation led to Ahearn's removal. In the following years he was entrusted with similar tasks for the city. His work against corruption and fraud earned him the political support of opponents of the Tammany Hall Society , who had come together in the so-called Fusion Party . In 1909, Mitchel became a member and chairman of the city ​​council . In 1913, he also headed the New York Federal Customs Service.

In the same year, Mitchel was elected Mayor of New York. He held this office between 1914 and 1917. On April 17, 1914, he was assassinated. The mayor was unharmed, and a bystander was wounded. In the beginning he was very popular as mayor. He campaigned for reform and reformed the police force, which before his time was also affected by corruption cases. At the same time, he fought against general crime, including organized crime. His financial and school policy was rejected by the New Yorkers. As a result, he lost much of his popularity. Just as unpopular was his demand for universal military training in the run-up to America's entry into the First World War . In 1917 he was no longer nominated for re-election. After his time as mayor, he joined the Air Force during the World War I United States Army at. In July 1918 he was stationed at a training airfield in Louisiana. He died on July 6th when his plane crashed on a military test flight at Calcasieu Parish .
