architecture
The country of Rwanda is highly urbanized . The model is the typology of the local courtyard house . A training center was built to strengthen the rural region. The buildings are grouped around a central square. Courtyards, alleys and niches are created in the spaces between them, creating places with different quality of stay.
The ensemble shows its importance as a public building in the small-scale environment.
The sloping roofs collect rainwater, rows of columns in front and deeply cut courtyards provide shade. A ventilation concept in combination with the storage mass of the massive brick walls enables a pleasant room climate. Brick is a locally available material and can be installed without machines. Local craftsmen have handcrafted 575,000 bricks and put them together with precision work.
