George Hendry

George Hendry (born September 2, 1920 in St. Louis , † August 17, 2011 ibid) was an American table tennis player . He won bronze at the 1938 World Cup with the US team.

Career

George Hendry achieved first successes in US national tournaments in the mid-1930s. In 1938 he was nominated for participation in the World Championships in London. Here he prevailed in the individual against the Hungarian Ernő Földi and the Englishman Stanley Proffitt. In the next round, however, he was defeated by the later vice world champion Richard Bergmann from Austria. He lost the doubles with Cai Fuhrman against the Austrians Alfred Liebster / Karl Sediwy . He was most successful with the American team, which finished third. After this World Cup, George Hendry was ranked second in the American national rankings.

In the 1940s he organized exhibition fights in the USA with Coleman Clark. From 1952 to 1981 he stopped playing table tennis, instead shifting his focus to his professional career in St. Louis. After that he achieved many successes in senior tournaments. In 1990 he became senior world champion in the age group over 70.

Private

George Hendry was married with children. The marriage ended in divorce.
