Thomas Josef Weikert (born November 15, 1961 in Hadamar ) is the president of the table tennis world association ITTF . Until March 2015 he was President of the German Table Tennis Association DTTB . He played in the Bundesliga in the 1980s .

During his active time, Weikert played in the table tennis Bundesliga. In 1984 he moved from TTC Herbornseelbach to TTC Grünweiß Bad Hamm . Via the stations TTSG 76 Wittlich, return to TTC Grünweiß Bad Hamm (1988), TV Bergnassau (1989), he came to TTC Elz in 1990, where he is still an active player and works on the board (as of August 2016).

The lawyer Thomas Weikert has held official duties in the DTTB since the mid-1990s. In 1995 he became chairman of the control committee. In December 2001 he acted as acting general secretary, and since 2002 he has acted as legal advisor. At the Federal General Assembly in June 2005 in Frankfurt am Main, he was elected as the successor to Walter Gründahl as DTTB President.

In 2008 Weikert became chairman of the sponsoring association of the Cologne Trainer Academy of the German Olympic Sports Confederation DOSB . At the Annual General Meeting 2009 he was elected Vice-President - one of eight - of the world association ITTF . Since September 2013 he has been deputy to ITTF President Adham Sharara , and on September 1, 2014 he took over his office on a temporary basis. On March 10, 2015, he gave up the office of DTTB President, among other things because of conflicts of interest. Michael Geiger became the provisional successor . On the fringes of the table tennis world championships in Düsseldorf , Weikert was elected ITTF President on May 31, 2017. He prevailed against the Belgian Jean-Michel Saive , who was supported by Sharara .

Weikert campaigned for a German anti-doping law . In 2018, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

Profession and private life

Weikert is married and has one son (* 1998). As a lawyer specializing in family and sports law, he works in his own law firm in Limburg.
