Career

education and profession

Lehmann was born in Berlin as the son of the chemist and engineer Arthur Lehmann. After graduating from the municipal high school in Stettin in 1907, he studied law for seven semesters at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. In June 1911, he passed the first state examination in law at the Superior Court in Berlin. In 1912 he received his doctorate cum laude from the law faculty of the University of Jena under Heinrich Gerland . In February 1916 he was admitted to the Chamber of Commerce as a lawyer in Berlin and was appointed notary in 1927.

President of the German Table Tennis Association

In addition to his professional activity, Lehmann had dedicated himself to table tennis . As an active player he belonged to the table tennis club Gelb-Weiß 1900 Berlin . He won the title at unofficial German championships from 1904 to 1907. He also played tennis, where he won around 150 prizes.

When table tennis picked up again in Germany in the mid-1920s and the call for uniform rules became loud, representatives from 21 German table tennis clubs met in the Palais Preysing in Munich on February 21, 1925 . Lehmann was elected to a committee whose task it was to found a "German Table Tennis Association". After preparatory work, a general assembly was called on November 8, 1925 in the club house of the Gelb-Weiß 1900 Berlin. The German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) was founded here by the 32 clubs present and Lehmann was elected as the first president.

Lehmann immediately prepared the establishment of the world association. At the end of 1925 he made contact with table tennis associations abroad. On January 15, 1926, the International Table Tennis Federation was founded in Berlin with the associations from Austria, England, Hungary, Wales and Germany. At the first table tennis world championship held in London in December of the same year , Lehmann led the German team as the non-playing captain . As a result, he planned to hold a World Cup in Germany. This endeavor led to the award of the fourth World Cup in 1930 to Berlin.

Under Lehmann's presidency, the number of German clubs increased to 70 in 1927/28. He was a delegate to the German Reich Committee for Physical Exercise (DRA). In the spring of 1929 he had to resign as a non-Aryan, and Werner Arndt was his successor .

Emigration and legal career in Argentina

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists, he left Germany and emigrated to Argentina in 1940. Under difficult circumstances, he set up a large new law firm in Buenos Aires. With the amendment of the Reich Citizenship Act in November 1941, his German citizenship was revoked. After the end of the Second World War, he was again admitted to the bar at the Higher Regional Court in Berlin and, on his own application, received German citizenship back in 1952.

The main focus of his legal work was the representation of Jewish emigrants on questions of reparation legislation . He advised the diplomatic mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in Argentina, established in 1951, orally and in writing, on how to implement it. Through his selfless activity, he earned a high reputation among his colleagues and became a senior and spokesman for the lawyers based in Buenos Aires and admitted to German courts.

In journalism he made a name for himself in Germany as an expert in questions of restitution and reparation law, on which he published numerous articles in legal journals. For many years he wrote for the Argentinisches Tageblatt .
