Adham Sharara (born March 24, 1953 in Cairo ) was president of the world table tennis association ITTF from 1999 to 2014 .

Active and functionary

Adham Sharara grew up in Canada. At the age of ten he began playing table tennis. Nine years later he was called up to the national team of Canada. He later became the coach of the national team and general director of the Canadian table tennis association CTTA.

When Xu Yinsheng no longer ran for the office of ITTF President in 1999 , Sharara was elected to succeed him. He is considered reform-minded with the aim of making table tennis more understandable and attractive for viewers and the media. During his tenure, the table tennis ball was enlarged from 38 mm to 40 mm. The way of counting has also been reformed, a sentence ends at 11 points (previously at 21 points). In addition, the service rule was changed and speed gluing was banned in 2008 . In 2014 it was decided to reduce the number of participants in World Championships from 2016.

In September 2014, Shahara resigned from his position as ITTF President. His successor was his previous deputy, Thomas Weikert .

Adham Sharara founded the marketing company TMS in 2002. He came under fire because he transferred the marketing of the rights of the world association to TMS and thus obtained personal advantages.

In March 2019, the world association ITTF suspended Adham Sharara for a period of four years on the grounds that Sharara had violated his fiduciary duties during his tenure as ITTF President. As a result, the ITTF suffered losses and was damaged .

Private

Sharara comes from a diplomatic family. He is Canadian. He is an electrical engineer by profession. Since August 1982 he has been married to the ten-time Canadian champion Mariann Domonkos (* 1958 in Budapest).
