Hans-Günter Petzold was born on September 28, 1931 in Zwickau. He was the only child of the Härtensdorf cantor and grew up in a musical family. Nonetheless, the son's natural history inclinations were encouraged early on. Petzold owned a turtle at pre-school age and got his first aquarium with viviparous toothcarps and labyrinth fish at the age of seven . When he was around nine years old, he began to be enthusiastic about reptiles and tended forest lizards himself . Petzold passed his Abitur at the Käthe-Kollwitz-Oberschule in Zwickau.

Hans-Günter Petzold became a member of the CDU as early as 1949 . From 1950 to 1955 he studied biology at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , with a temporary move in 1954 to the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald . During this time he used an internship as an ordinary seaman for a fishing trip on the Iceland-Greenland route and worked at the Hiddensee Biological Research Institute . In his diploma thesis he dealt with "Systematic-ecological contributions to the fauna of the coastal groundwater". Even before the diploma examination, he began working as a scientific assistant under Heinrich Dathe on April 1, 1955 for the Berlin Zoo, which had not yet opened . In 1956 he was promoted to senior research assistant and in 1960 to director's assistant. His doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. Petzold acquired in 1960 with the ornithological and behavioral subject "Contributions to the comparative ethology of swans". In 1965 he was finally appointed deputy director of the Berlin zoo. His habilitation thesis "Tasks and problems of the zoo in researching the expressions of life of the lower amniotes (reptiles)" he completed a few days before his death.

Hans-Günter Petzold wrote over 150 scientific and popular scientific articles. As a zoological gardener and herpetologist, he traveled to numerous European countries as well as Asian parts of the Soviet Union, Algeria, Vietnam and Cuba. From 1963 to 1981 he was a member of the CDU parliamentary group in the People's Chamber, where he was a member of the culture committee. In addition, he was involved in the district board of the CDU, the district board of DSF, in the Urania as well as in the central specialist committee for aquariums and terrariums and as chairman of the central commission for vivaristics in the Kulturbund.

Hans-Günter Petzold died on November 19, 1982 at the age of 51 after a long and serious illness. He was buried in the Protestant Karlshorster and New Friedrichsfelder Friedhof in Berlin-Karlshorst .
