The Hiddensee Biological Station is a branch of the University of Greifswald on the west coast of the island of Hiddensee in the district of Kloster . It is directed by Irmgard Blindow.

Like the Hiddensee ornithological station, the Hiddensee Biological Station emerged from the Hiddensee Biological Research Institute, which was founded in 1930 as one of the first ecological research institutions in Germany. Today the biological station is used as a research, course, excursion and workshop center by researchers and students from home and abroad. In addition to various bungalows, there are also permanent houses on the site. One of these houses is the listed building for PhD students, designed by Max Taut in 1924 .

In 2011, extensive renovation measures began, particularly with regard to the accommodation options.

research

Biological research has been carried out on Hiddensee since 1930. Research areas today include aquatic ecology and the island's flora and fauna. The island of Hiddensee, located in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park , is of particular importance to biologists due to the fact that its flora and fauna have not been changed by humans.

getting there

The biological station is located on the west coast of the village of Kloster, while the port of Kloster is on the east coast of the village. The biological station in the village of Kloster is within walking distance.

In the winter months, the village of Kloster auf Hiddensee can only be reached by ferry from Schaprode on Rügen . In the summer months there is also a ferry from Stralsund to Hiddensee.
